Best Vacuum Cleaner Buying Guide 2021

Vacuums are not as simple as they once were and with so much to consider it may be difficult to determine the best vacuum for you. There are several things you will need to consider from features to the filters of the vacuum. You will also need to think of allergies and whether there are pets in the home. This can all make a difference in the type of vacuum you will need. Check out our best vacuum cleaner buying guide 2021.

Vacuum Cleaner Buying Guide 2021

Types of Vacuums

There are a wide variety of vacuums on the market. The most common and traditional one is the upright vacuum cleaner.

The upright vacuum cleaner typically uses vacuum bags that are messy, inefficient, can clog, and are expensive to replace. These vacuums also have a roller brush in the floor head which is meant to pick up hair and other particles from carpeted surfaces.

The upright vacuum cleaner moves in a way where you can only push back and forth and cannot be used on stairs.

Water-Based Vacuums

Water-based vacuum cleaners are still somewhat of a weird concept to most people. But while the idea of using water may sound unusual, most people are surprised to find that they are actually really practical.

Water-based vacuum cleaners use a water basin. Unlike most other types of vacuums, which rely on a filter or a bag, water-based vacuum cleaners trap dirt in water. As a result, there are no bags or filters that can clog, and the dirty water is discarded after each use so you’re always starting fresh.

Cylinder Vacuums

Next are cylinder vacuums, which are lighter and more portable than upright vacuums. These can be awkward as they require you to pull the vacuum behind you.

Cylinder vacuums are best used to reach under and around furniture as well as stairs.

Cordless Vacuums

Cordless vacuums also known as stick vacuums were initially designed for small cleaning tasks but have evolved and can be used all around the house. These vacuums are also much smaller and (typically) less powerful.

Since they are cordless, these vacuums will need to be charged before use which can be inconvenient.

Robot Vacuums

Gaining in popularity, robot vacuums have become the go-to for many people. These vacuums are for people who have some sense of how tech works.

Most robot vacuums use wifi and can even be controlled from an app on your phone where you can tell the vacuum where and when it will operate.

One downside that many customers have noted is the noise level of these vacuums. The solution is to have them run when no one is home.

Handheld Vacuums

Handheld vacuums are perfect for cleaning quick spills and for fitting into tight spaces. These are also cordless so make sure the battery is charged before use. This is also the best vacuum to use when cleaning your car.

Features of the Best Vacuums in 2021

Now that you know the different kinds of vacuums on the market it is important to know what features you should be looking for. When picking out the best vacuum for your home consider the following features:

  • Battery life
  • Sensory technology
  • Capacity
  • Charging time
  • Slit to cut hair
  • Headlights
  • Smart technology
  • Battery level indicator
  • Suction power
  • Cords
  • Weight
  • Brushes

Some of these may be more important to you than others. Determine what the most important features are for your needs when choosing a vacuum.

Oh My Sirena!

I’ve never used a canister vacuum so that is taking a little getting used to. It’s kind of funny; my husband pointed out I don’t call it the vacuum or a sweeper. I call it “my Sirena”. It works great, I was surprised how much pet hair it picked up my first use. The deodorizer and essential oils I will definitely order more of when these run out. My old vacuum seems like a toy in comparison of how much more effective my Sirena is. It’s only been a couple of weeks but as of right now I am very happy with this purchase. Will write another review in December when I’ve had it a while. The extra hose and attachments I haven’t really figured out a good way to store it for accessibility and convenience. Any suggestions?

Best vacuum I've encountered in 16 years

Sixteen years ago I bought an Ocean Blue water filtered vacuum. It was by far the best vacuum I had ever owned, but it's wearing out now and they quit making them. I just got a new Sirena and it has all the features of the Ocean Blue plus a few improvements. If you know anything about water filtration vacs, I don't need to tell you how good they are. This one is the best I've encountered in a long time.
