Fully Forged vs Stamped Knives

Difference Between Fully Forged vs Stamped Knives

The knives that you choose for your kitchen will impact almost every meal that you prepare. Whether you are chopping up veggies or slicing meats, you do not want to cut your losses when shopping for knives. One of the most confusing parts about shopping for knives is knowing the difference between forged and stamped knives. This blog will explain the major and minor differences between fully forged vs stamped knives. This will help you choose the right knife set, whether you’re a beginner or a professional chef.

Fully Forged vs Stamped Knives

The Difference Between Forged vs. Stamped

The difference between fully forged knives and stamped knives is in the creation of the knives themselves.

Forged knives are made up of a single bar of steel that is heated and hammered into shape. They are first heat-treated, then hammered/pounded to get into the right shape. This helps the blade retain its edge for longer since the internal molecules of the metal are being rearranged.

Stamped knives, on the other hand, are cut from a large steel sheet instead of being pounded down from one large piece of steel. You can usually tell forged knives from their heavier and thicker built, whereas stamped knives are usually thin and flexible.

When choosing the type of knife for your specific needs, you must know the pros and cons of each option. It is possible that you may need both, as heavy meats and tough surfaces can demand the brute strength of a fully forged knife while slicing or chopping soft items over a long period can be much easier if you have a lightweight stamped knife to turn to. Here are the pros and cons of each option.

Fully Forged vs Stamped Knives

Fully Forged Knives Pros

The power and weight of a full forged knife will give you precision when cutting through tough surfaces. You know that your knife will not bend or slip out of place like some stamped knives will under similar circumstances. The weight and angle of the added bolster and handle on a fully forged knife will also protect your hands and fingers from dangerous angles that make it easier for your blade to slip out of place. You can also generally count on forged knives being more durable and holding their shape for longer over the years.

  • Bolsters add stability and durability
  • Forging process makes steel stronger
  • The weight of the knife puts additional power behind each cut you make
  • No bending or slipping from flimsy blades

Fully Forged Knives Cons

Not every cooking job demands power. If you have a delicate slicing or high-volume chopping to do, the weight of fully forged knives will start to feel bulky. This can be a huge fatigue problem for professional chefs who have to cut such items for long periods without rest.

  • Bolster and handle design add weight that can fatigue your hands over long periods
  • Blades are less flexible than stamped blades
  • They are generally more expensive than stamped blades

Stamped Knives Pros

The smaller size and more compact design of stamped knives are much more lightweight that fully forged knives. You can use stamped knives for long periods of time without feeling the same amount of fatigue as with a fully-forged knife. You will also be able to maneuver a stamped knife around difficult areas more easily because there is less bulk.

  • Lightweight compared to forged knives
  • Better hand grip with no bolster prevents uncomfortable finger and hand positions
  • Easier to slice because of thin blade
  • More flexible for difficult angles
  • Usually much less expensive than fully forged knives

Stamped Knives Cons

The blade of stamped knives can easily bend and slip out of place. Unlike fully forged knives, most stamped knives do not have a bolster addition to the handle, which protects you by not letting the blade make jagged movements. The thin blade can also feel flimsy and inexact if you need to cut through a very thick or large surface. If it is sharp enough, it should eventually get through, but fully forged knives will often do the same job in one swift, precise slice.

  • Lack of handheld bolsters make them hard to handle, unbalanced
  • More dangerous without bolster angle to create natural stop motion
  • Flexible blade will bend, slip and become imprecise against tough surfaces

Oh My Sirena!

I’ve never used a canister vacuum so that is taking a little getting used to. It’s kind of funny; my husband pointed out I don’t call it the vacuum or a sweeper. I call it “my Sirena”. It works great, I was surprised how much pet hair it picked up my first use. The deodorizer and essential oils I will definitely order more of when these run out. My old vacuum seems like a toy in comparison of how much more effective my Sirena is. It’s only been a couple of weeks but as of right now I am very happy with this purchase. Will write another review in December when I’ve had it a while. The extra hose and attachments I haven’t really figured out a good way to store it for accessibility and convenience. Any suggestions?

Best vacuum I've encountered in 16 years

Sixteen years ago I bought an Ocean Blue water filtered vacuum. It was by far the best vacuum I had ever owned, but it's wearing out now and they quit making them. I just got a new Sirena and it has all the features of the Ocean Blue plus a few improvements. If you know anything about water filtration vacs, I don't need to tell you how good they are. This one is the best I've encountered in a long time.
