Avoid These Common Vacuuming Mistakes to Protect Your Home and Vacuum Cleaner

Patrick Nehme

When you buy a vacuum cleaner online, it’s natural to be eager to use it right away. However, diving in without understanding how to properly operate and maintain your new machine can lead to mistakes that might damage your carpets, furniture, or even the vacuum itself. To help you avoid these pitfalls, this guide will outline the worst vacuuming practices and how to prevent them from damaging your property. Keep reading to discover tips on preventing the loss of suction, cleaning filters correctly, and more.

Preventing Loss of Suction: Why Water-Based Vacuums Are Superior

Purchasing a vacuum cleaner is a significant investment, so it’s concerning when your vacuum begins to lose suction either quickly or over time. Loss of suction is a common problem that can often be avoided with proper maintenance, such as regularly emptying filters, dust cups, and hoses to remove any clogs that could obstruct airflow. Ensuring that all connection points are sealed and leak-free is also crucial to maintaining strong suction.

One effective way to avoid suction loss altogether is by choosing a water-based vacuum cleaner. Unlike traditional vacuums that rely on bags and filters, which can become clogged and lead to reduced performance, water-based vacuums maintain consistent suction by using water as a filter. These vacuums don’t require bags or replaceable filters, which means they never lose suction over time. When purchasing online, look for a model with an extended manufacturer’s warranty (at least five years) to ensure long-term reliability and peace of mind.

The Importance of Proper Filter Maintenance

The filter in your vacuum is designed to trap dust and dirt particles, preventing them from being released back into the air. However, a dirty or clogged filter can hinder your vacuum’s performance and even cause it to spread more dust than it captures.

While some vacuums feature self-cleaning or disposable filters that require minimal maintenance, others require regular cleaning or replacement. If your vacuum has a filter that needs attention, be diligent about keeping it clean or replacing it as needed. Neglecting this task can lead to reduced suction, increased wear and tear, and ultimately, a shorter lifespan for your vacuum.

Don’t Overlook Attachments: They’re There for a Reason

When you purchase a vacuum cleaner online, it’s important to take your time and choose a model that includes the right attachments for your cleaning needs. Vacuum attachments are designed to help you tackle specific tasks, such as cleaning upholstery, reaching tight corners, or removing pet hair from furniture.

Before using your new vacuum, take a few minutes to read the instructions and familiarize yourself with the different attachments. Understanding how to use them properly can make your cleaning routine more efficient and help you avoid common mistakes that could damage your vacuum or surfaces in your home.

Avoid Vacuuming Over Large Objects

Vacuum cleaners are designed to handle dirt, dust, and small debris—not large objects like coins, paper clips, or small toys. Running a vacuum over large items can cause significant damage to the machine’s internal components, such as the motor, belts, or fan.

Before vacuuming, take a moment to inspect the area and remove any large objects. It’s best to sweep the floor with a broom or pick up visible debris by hand to ensure your vacuum doesn’t encounter anything it isn’t designed to handle. Even heavy-duty vacuums can suffer from attempting to pick up objects that are too large or dense.

Oh My Sirena!

I’ve never used a canister vacuum so that is taking a little getting used to. It’s kind of funny; my husband pointed out I don’t call it the vacuum or a sweeper. I call it “my Sirena”. It works great, I was surprised how much pet hair it picked up my first use. The deodorizer and essential oils I will definitely order more of when these run out. My old vacuum seems like a toy in comparison of how much more effective my Sirena is. It’s only been a couple of weeks but as of right now I am very happy with this purchase. Will write another review in December when I’ve had it a while. The extra hose and attachments I haven’t really figured out a good way to store it for accessibility and convenience. Any suggestions?

Best vacuum I've encountered in 16 years

Sixteen years ago I bought an Ocean Blue water filtered vacuum. It was by far the best vacuum I had ever owned, but it's wearing out now and they quit making them. I just got a new Sirena and it has all the features of the Ocean Blue plus a few improvements. If you know anything about water filtration vacs, I don't need to tell you how good they are. This one is the best I've encountered in a long time.
